** MAKE BACKUPS OF YOUR IMPORTANT DATA **
I recommend using Acronis True Image to back up your data before you start this procedure. If you have important documents, don’t forget to copy them to an external drive or CD / DVD media. You will be hard pressed to get it back if you forget!!

With OEM’s like DELL or HP, you usually either are provided with discs, have to create your own discs or have a restore partition.

You really need to go to your manufacturer’s website and get the specific instructions for your model but here are some common ways to do it.

*Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord.

Generic PC with Windows OS:
Insert original installation disc into your drive and boot to that drive. Make sure you have your Motherboard drivers (Chipset, Video, Audio, Ethernet, Modem, etc.) handy as you will need this after the OS is installed. You will also need to perform all upgrades to your OS like SP2 or SP3 on Windows XP and SP1 on Vista if your recovery media does not contain those updates.

Today, we had a Dell Inspiron 8100 come into the shop with 2 issues:

1. THE REAR FANS WERE NOT SPINNING
2. THE VIDEO WAS 1/4 NORMAL SIZE DURING START UP.

1. After using a can of Dust Off on the back fans, I noticed they were not spinning as freely as they should.  I ordered a new set of Dell Part# 068RU fans and installed them.  Installation of these fans is pretty intense, you have to remove everything to get to them.  For some reason DELL decided to place the plugs for the fans underneath the motherboard!  So, there is your $90.00 in labor right there.  The client also wanted Windows XP installed on the laptop, which they provided.  Then I installed a program for DELL FAN control in XP.
2. After configuring the FANS I installed the new drivers for the nVIDIA go display adapter and re sized the screen to 1024 X 768.  It worked fine after that.  The Dell Inspiron 8100’s have what is called “optimal resolution”, it is designed to be run at 1600 X 1200.  If you just want to re size it with the current driver installed, hold the  FN key and F7 at the same time.  It will maximize your screen.
