The History of Internet Explorer

December 2nd, 2008

In the early 90s—the dawn of history as far as the World Wide Web is concerned—relatively few users were communicating across this global network. They used an assortment of shareware and other software for Microsoft Windows® operating system.

In 1995, Microsoft hosted an Internet Strategy Day and announced its commitment to adding Internet capabilities to all its products. In fulfillment of that announcement, Microsoft Internet Explorer arrived as both a graphical Web browser and the name for a set of technologies.
1995: Internet Explorer 1.0

In July 1995, Microsoft released the Windows 95 operating system, which included built-in support for dial-up networking and TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol), key technologies for connecting to the Internet. In response to the growing public interest in the Internet, Microsoft created an add-on to the operating system called Internet Explorer 1.0. When Windows 95 with Internet Explorer debuted, the Internet became much more accessible for many more people.

Internet Explorer technology originally shipped as the Internet Jumpstart Kit in Microsoft Plus! For Windows 95. Internet Explorer replaced the need for cumbersome, manual installation steps required by many of the existing shareware browsers.

1995: Internet Explorer 2.0

In November 1995, Microsoft released its first cross-platform browser, Internet Explorer 2.0, which supported both Macintosh and 32-bit Windows users.

With Internet Explorer 2.0 came a new set of fledgling Internet technologies that offered Web developers and designers the power to design secure, media-rich Web sites with tracking capabilities. Internet Explorer 2.0 technology introduced Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol as well as support for HTTP cookies, Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), and Internet newsgroups.

1996: Internet Explorer 3.0

In August 1996, Microsoft released its completely rebuilt Internet Explorer technology, which included features that were revolutionary for the time. Designed for Windows 95, Internet Explorer 3.0 technology offered useful components that immediately appealed to users, including Internet Mail and News 1.0 and Windows Address Book. Later, Microsoft NetMeeting® and Windows Media Player were added. Now the Internet Explorer browser could display GIF and JPG files, play MIDI sound files, and play streaming audio files without the assistance of helper applications.

For Web developers, Internet Explorer 3.0 technology delivered a flexible programming model with a choice of scripting languages. Web designers also received more predictable results, thanks to Cascading Style Sheets (CSS). Moreoever, Internet Explorer 3.0 was designed to allow Web developers to extend it easily at a time when Internet standards were quickly evolving.

1997: Internet Explorer 4.0

Designed for Windows 95, Windows 98, and Windows NT®, Internet Explorer 4.0 technology was a significant move forward. For Web developers, the addition of Dynamic HTML (DHTML) heralded the next step in Web design. DHTML gave Web developers more control over content and style and created opportunities that previously had been possible only with software applications.

Suddenly Web pages became much more interactive—users could expand menus with a click or drag images and objects around. The Web started to look more like the applications and games that people were accustomed to and less like a static series of pages.

With Internet Explorer 4.0, Microsoft Outlook® Express 4.0 was also installed for the first time as an upgrade to Internet Mail and News. This built-in component improved the way users sent, received, and organized their e-mail and address book.

1998: Internet Explorer 5.0

With the September 1998 release of Internet Explorer 5.0 technology, developers gained the ability to design richer Web applications. DHTML capabilities were expanded, giving Web developers more flexibility and power to create interactive Web sites.

Now personalization became a key focus as Web applications based on DHTML emerged. Users encountered rich applications on the Web—for example, an expense report could automatically configure itself based on a user’s personalized settings. With expanded programming capabilities such as these, Internet Explorer 5.0 technologies helped usher in a new era of e-commerce.

2001: Internet Explorer 6

Internet Explorer 6 technology was released with Windows XP in 2001 as a more private, reliable, and flexible technology than previous versions. Because privacy and security had become customer priorities, Microsoft implemented tools that support Platform for Privacy Preferences (P3P), a technology under development by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C).

From the home user simply browsing content on the Web, to the IT administrator deploying and maintaining a rich set of Windows Internet technologies, to the Web developer creating rich Web content, Internet Explorer 6 technologies provide the freedom to experience the best of the Internet.

For more information, see the Internet Explorer Web site.

Cyber Monday by ThreatFire

November 27th, 2008

Ensure you’re protected ahead of Cyber Monday
PC Tools’ tips for safe online Christmas shopping

1. Use web browser protection

While shopping online you may come across what appear to be legitimate-looking websites created with the express intent of committing financial or identity fraud. Hackers can also infect legitimate or reputable websites, such that by merely going to a website, you could infect your family’s computer and expose your personal details and financial welfare to risk.

Reputable browser protection, such as PC Tools Browser Defender, warns you about potentially dangerous websites and identifies websites that are trying to infect or harm your computer - standard option with PC Tools Internet Security.

2. Install comprehensive security protection

You can also help protect yourself from malicious attacks by installing reputable security software such as Spyware Doctor with AntiVirus or PC Tools Internet Security which are recommended by leading independent publications. Make sure your security product has real-time and browser protection, which can block attacks as they happen and while you surf the web, as well as behavioural protection, which helps protect against new and unknown threats.

3. Ensure you have the latest updates

Always keep your product up to date. Ensure you are using the inbuilt Smart Update feature which automatically downloads the latest databases and software updates.

4. Do your homework

Check out the website’s refund and returns policies, privacy policy and legal notices. These documents should be readily available on online websites. You will want to know for example, what your rights are in relation to any goods you buy on line and how a company deals with your personal details.

5. Be click aware

Be wise about clicking on links in emails from online retailers. Cybercriminals wanting to steal your personal information can now create emails that look exactly the same as those that come from well-known online stores. So even emails that may appear to be from a legitimate company may be dangerous. Make sure you have a powerful spam filter that automatically detects suspicious emails as they arrive in your inbox.

6. Look for the signs

Using your browser, you can view the site’s security certificate and verify that it is issued to the web site you intended. A security certificate is designed to give you comfort that the information you send from your computer is kept secure from access by other parties. You should also check that the security certificate is registered to the website you are visiting. You can do this by double clicking on the security icon and verifying that the name in the certificate matches the name of the retailer.

7. Pay using a secure method

If you use a debit card when purchasing from an online shopping site, the purchase amount will be immediately withdrawn from your account and will be more difficult to get back if the transaction turns out to be fraudulent. If you use a credit card you can contest transactions before you pay your monthly statement. Frequent online shoppers should consider setting up a separate credit card with a low limit, so that if their details do get stolen, a thief will be limited in the amount of money they can charge to the card.

8. Don’t give out too many details

Online retailers should only require your basic contact details (for example, name, billing address and contact number) and card details in order to process a credit/debit card payment. If you are concerned that a retailer is requesting too much information, contact them by phone to find out why they need so much information, how they plan to use it and if they have a privacy policy to protect you.

9. Keep records of the transaction

Make sure you print and save records of any online transactions, including the product description, price and the receipt of payment. If the site turns out to be fraudulent, you’ll need this information to advise the relevant authorities in order to try to get your money back.

How do I Block a Website in Internet Explorer 7

    November 22nd, 2008

How to Block a Website in Internet Explorer 7

from wikiHow - The How to Manual That You Can Edit

The Internet is a vast web of inter-connected servers which may host inappropriate websites for certain people, especially children. The following instructions are for blocking malicious and unwanted websites in all versions of Internet Explorer. If you are using Firefox or other browsers, you may want to consider another, much more advanced way, to block websites using a host file: Use a Hosts File in Windows. Here is the easiest and most effective method to safely surf the Internet through IE.

    Steps

    1. Open Internet Explorer. In the Menubar click Tools → Internet Options → Content. In the Content Advisor box, click Enable.
    2. Click the Approved Sites tab. Enter the address of the website. Keep in mind - if you want to block the complete website put * in front. For example to block myspace completely, type *.myspace.com Click Never and then OK.
    3. Click on the General tab and sure to select Users can see websites that have no ratings
    4. Enter a password you can remember easily with a hint.
    5. Click OK to safely surf the Internet.

    Tips

    • Microsoft uses the Family Online Safety Institute [1] for the rating service. You can customize and see if that fits in your need.
    • Consider installing web filtering software such as [2], which allows or disallows websites based on their content. Some good free web filtering software is: Aobo Website Blocker K9 Web Protection, Naomi, NetDog Internet Filter, and SafeSquid.

    Warnings

    • If someone types the URL in the search engine (Google), and the websites comes up as the search result, then they can click on the cached link and see the earlier version of that site.

Help me back up my computer data!

    November 21st, 2008

I can’t begin to tell you the countless times I have heard this question.

Every time I answer Acronis True Image.

    Acronis True Image 2009 Home

Open Question: My computer cant read burned DVD's?
Ok, so my computer got a bad virus, but eventually i was able to get rid of it using multiple virus programs. After the virus was gone my computer wasnt acting the same. It was very slow and i could barely do 1 task without it locking up. I decided to do the system recovery, but before i did i backed up all my pictures, videos, etc.. onto DVD+RW and CD-R discs. After the reset my computer is back to normal, but the computer wont read the DVD+RW backup discs. It will read the CD-R discs, regular dvd movies, music cd's and some old DVD+RW's from the past.... Now, you can clearly see that data had been burned onto the discs. Ive even tried to use my laptop, but no luck. Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this?...or at least get the data off the discs? thanks

Resolved Question: Old Phone Gone. How do I migrate Contacts from Blackberry (BB) to Android?
My sister-in-law's BB was acting up, so I backed it up using the BB Desktop program on my laptop. She then took the phone back to T-Mobile and got herself a shiny new Motorola/Android phone. This is my laptop, not hers. How do I open the BB backup file and migrate her contacts to her new Android phone? Theoretically I could copy the backup file to her computer, but she isn't running the dreaded MS Outlook (she may have Outlook Express which Windows XP came with). How do I migrate her contact data?

Voting Question: *******External hard disk need help !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! everything gone********?
i have an external hard disk with all my important data, and i was working with it to backup some files in ubuntu. i don't realy know what happened but from this moment on to the next one it didn't recognized the External disk anymore so i plugged it into my other pc and it didn't create the icon in my computer ether. so that was my first real problem, i downloaded some recovery software and i can get into the drive but all information was deleted, so i realy need help one this one i have to find a program that gets back all the information on the external disk, and not to find the files and save tem on for example a pc because my pc doesn't have that much capacity. i'm very great full for help .

Resolved Question: Good program to use copying data?
I haven't taken a notion to build myself a new computer in a few years. I've decided it's time to upgrade, and I'm wondering if there's a good program I can use to transfer the data from my old PC to an external USB drive that will help me insure data integrity. We're talking roughly 500GB to move, and I've seen too many issues with "drag and drop" to trust that much being moved at once. To drag and drop it without worrying about file corruption, it would take forever moving a few files at a time. Is there a good file transfer program available (preferably free, or at least inexpensive) that will not only move the data, but also check the files I'm moving against the original copies? If you're wondering why I'm so concerned about data corruption, this is my entire DVD collection on a 4 year old Media Center PC. I don't want to move everything, erase the original backups, and then find that the "new" copies are crap. The thoughts of re-ripping, and re-encoding all those DVDs is something I don't find at all attractive. Thanks in advance to all of you who try and provide me with an answer.

Voting Question: Hard Drives and Customs?
Hey guys I'm coming to the US for work in a few weeks and just had an awful thought. I remember reading a while ago that US customs are searching through peoples laptops and hard drives. Now I have nothing to worry about as I don't have porn, etc on my computer/hard drives but I will have trouble proving that the movies, programs and music are paid for. Essentially, I'm an IT geek and because of the amount I move I have copied all my DVD's (about 350) and music (5000 songs plus - combination of CD's and paid for content) onto my external drive. Also I'm a software developer and have legitimate ISO's (which is the format that pirated software usually comes in) that Microsoft provide for developers like myself. The problem is I think that to an over eager customs officer they will think all the Christmases have come at once if they start looking at my drive. Also because I'm paranoid about loosing data I have multiple drives (ones that backup the others) and I'm worried that this makes me conspicuous and a target if my baggage is xrayed... Any ideas on what I can do or if I have anything to worry about???? How do you prove that what you have is legitimate - I feel like I'm guilty until proven innocent.... Cheers Ant P.s. I'm coming to the US from Australia I know I could hide the data (like what some of you guys have suggested) but I have nothing to hide and if I do hide it and they happened to find it somehow, then it makes me look really guilty, when again I have nothing to hide... Also we are talking about Terra-bites worth of data... Hence why its on the hard drives...

Resolved Question: What Comp Virus did this, Search Engines won't go to websites and program files won't open?
When I use Yahoo or Google, the search goes through but any link I click on goes to something different, usually a different search engine. Also, clicking on any program file on the computer not on the internet brings up the "Open this with what" Page. Some things I can not even access like the program Paint or view my system info. I have been able to find most file's opening program through browsing through system memory, but the "always use this file" check box is cleared out and can't be used. I can not turn off the internet connection from Local Area Connection like I have done in the past, and if it does turn it off it will not turn in back on until I do a re-boot and restore the connection. Won't even go in and repair the connection like I used to do when it worked. Finally, the computer sometimes will turn off when told, other times it will just sit their with a blank screen until you finally turn this off. Computer has crashed and been fixed a few times by me, always using my backup hard drive to restore my data files. Zonealarm since I installed it has been doing a great job up until now, but out of all the times I've gotten virus's and spy where I have never had these problems. Computer is an old Compaq Presario Desktop from 2005, and I am pretty close to going and getting a new tower, but I don't want to get rid of my old Compaq.

Voting Question: Are there any programs that will restore computer files and programs installed?
I have the factory disk for my comp n have restored a few times. But everytime i do it, I loose all my programs installed and all the data files stored ,like settings, messenger archives, etc. I tried using the backup in comp and stored to my external drive. But now it says no backup stored in this comp / or its not a backup file. Have been decompressing all and not sure if its safe to move to "c" folders where they were. Looking for software that will clone the comp after formatting and reinstalling Vista manufacturer disks. Anybody know of any?

Resolved Question: Serious problems with my compaq, (fake spyware removal, isapnp.sys, Fl studio, agp440.sys) need help!?
Some info: brand/model:Compaq Evo N610c OS: windows XP sp3 Okay well this is a really long detailed description of the problem and any advice will be greatly appreciated. I will describe everything in steps as it happened, 1)I was downloading an .iso file for a psp backup game, when i got one of those annoying fake spyware remover programs that act legit but are just spyware. (i have gotten this before but this time it was a different spyware virus) 2)so i tried to get rid of it the way I got rid of the last imposter program, but this method failed. 3)so i got spyware doctor(program) to remove all the infections my system had, it found around 9 infections 3 of which being in the really harmful area. after I did this, i tried to reboot because spyware doctor said it was needed in order to fully remove the infections. 4)while it was rebooting , it just froze, and it would not pass the main COMPAQ screen. and in safe mode it would freeze while loading "isapnp.sys" . 5)so i found a website(using my other laptop) on how to fix that problem witch involved using the xp cd and the recovery mode, i deleted a few files and re copied them. 6)BANG! my laptop worked and I was happy, but i noticed that everything i had on my desktop was gone, so i had 2 profiles , administrator and a limited account. My limited account was gone and only my administrator profile was left. and the password had been removed. 7)so i checked on my harddrive and i still had all my data on the program files and on documents and settings. but a few things were not working, heres a few things that changed: a] for some reason i cannot move files from one folder to another, i have to copy then paste or just click on the side where it says move file to, then look for the folder and thats a pain in the ***... b]my winrar was acting strange because my .rar files did not automatically say extract here and all those option when the right mouse button is pressed. so I have to open the winrar program in order to extract it and all that. c]when i go to the add remove programs option on control panel, none of my programs appear, at first i thought it just took long to load them but i left it for a good while and still nothing. d]and when i go to start>turn off computer, for some reason my laptop freezes! the only way i can turn it off in order to save my settings is to open up task manager and then turn off, but even then it just reboots and doesnt turn off all the way!! c]another urgent problem, i the...

Resolved Question: Need help recovering files! Please help me out!?
Ok so a friend fixed my computer and upgraded my operating system from windows vista to windows 7, so when he did everything was erased. Of course he did a backup of all my files (documents, music, pictures etc.), but he didn't do a backup of my programs and games. It wasn't such a big problem, since i can just download the programs and install the games again. The real problem is that when the games were uninstalled, so where all their files (which includes that game save files). There are save files to games I had for over 3 years, so I really need help getting them back. System restore wont go back to before the operating system was changed, and i've tried every single data recovery software, but they only recover documents, pictures, etc. Please help me!

Resolved Question: Which online business idea should I do?
Im 13. I want to start an online business over the summer. I want to make six or more figures a year. That might sound crazy since im only 13, but it is my goal. I have money to start the business, and my grandparents might invest. Coding will be done by my cousin who is at RIT for web design and programming, or I could hire a web design firm, or hire someone from Elance. I have a few ideas, but Im not sure which one I should do. Which one is the most profitable? 1. A website where users can submit original songs and other users can listen, rate, comment, share, and chat. Users can also create a profile page and keep track of there favorite music, find new band members in the band member finder, and post info. I would make money by selling ad space, and I could make money by creating a pro membership level if the site becomes big enough. I would either hire a web design firm (although i think it could cost $100,000, in that case, i wont hire a web design firm), a coder from elance for a good price, or have my cousin code it. I love this idea, and it doesnt have that much competition other than purevolume.com. 2. I would sell musical instruments (bass, guitars, drums, dj and lighting, vocals, keyboards) on my website. i would buy them wholesale and sell them for a bigger price. I would then have the wholesaler dropship to the customer. There is a lot of competition, though. Try Sam Ash or Guitar Center or musiciansfriend.com. 3. A job search website. This could be a site where the employers post wanted ads and people can apply for each job. I would charge the employer a comission to post the ad. 4. A online backup website. This is where customers can back up important data such as files, photos, music, etc. to a sever. I would purchase www.remote-backup.com's virtual hosting set up for $500. it allows you to sell their customizable software to your customers and access the administrative stuff from a central account on their site. So I could have a plan for 5gb of storage and sell it to a customer for $25 a month. thats around $300 a year from only 1 customer. remote-backup only charges me the once for the $500, and charges me $1 for every customer i get and then $.25 for every gb they use. Many people are backing up now, so this could be profitable. Although there is mozy and snapfish and other companies already around. 4. This is a website where people can post and sell and buy websites. Like sitepoint.com although. This could be a good site thou...

Resolved Question: What is the most dependable laptop brand?
I had a Dell Dimension 8200 desktop, I currently have an Acer Aspire 5000 laptop and a Toshiba Satellite laptop. They are all junk. They work great for a while, but always end up screwed up. I don't download music or random files. I don't visit porn sites. I just do normal person computer stuff like Stumble Upon, use photoshop, Facebook, and run Acid Pro for my home music recordings. I've paid for Norton, and Mcafee and all the different safety programs, but they never help. I am always looking at a Blue Screen of Death, slow loading, popups, spyware, and God knows what else with every computer I've ever owned. It's really getting obnoxious. I just want to get on and use my damn computer without worrying that I'll have to "press any key to skip disk check" at Windows logon. I don't wanna worry about having to backup all my data all the time because I never know when my computer is going to crash and I'll have to reformat the drive and reload Windows again. I'm over it. Do Macs have these problems, or something similar? Is there any one particular brand that is not susceptible to these ridiculous problems? I would prefer if any answerer left a reasonable explanation for their choice and not just base this on opinion. I want a powerful gaming computer that can also handle music recording and video editing etc. I have been hearing good things about Alienware brand laptops. Is this a pretty good computer, or is it just a super fast Cadillac of PC's that is gonna crash and suck at everything eventually? Any advice is appreciated.

Resolved Question: Is it OK to get rid of these files?
I'm trying to get rid of junk off my computer and I noticed a "Symantec" folder. I think it's from Norton 360, but I uninstalled that and now have Malwarebytes and AVG. I opened the folder and there was an "N360" folder. Here's how it goes: Symantec>N360>Backup Data>Files(lots) and a folder "rule"> empty I am most certain I uninstalled Norton 360 and I even checked my program list and it's not there. Can I get rid of this "Symantec Folder"? I also found this: Local Disk C:> Documents and Settings > All Users > "symantec temporary files (folder)" > "N360S300EN" Norton 360 Symantec Corporation

Resolved Question: How do I safely remove the AV Security Suite Virus?
My computer was recently infected with the AV Security Suite Virus. I have removed a virus from my computer before successfully but this one is a bit more challenging for me to remove. I created a new user account so that I can access the internet. I have looked at numerous websites on how to remove it and none of them are helpful to me. If I just use my new user account and delete the old one will the virus be removed from my computer? Can I somehow transfer all of my data onto this account? If I do this then delete the old account, will this be a good solution to my problem? What is the best way to get rid of this virus? If I use this account to install a virus removal program, can it be used on the other account to safely remove the virus from the original account? Please help. I don't have any sort of backup for my files and I don't want to lose them but I need to get rid of this thing.

Voting Question: Fixing Corrupted NBF Files?
I recently backed up my computer's files onto my new external hard drive, using the software that came with the hard drive. However, after doing a completely fresh Windows installation on my computer (wiping the partition in the process), I was unable to restore my files. The program I used to backup my files is NTI Backup Now EZ, which created several NBF files as well as a CAL file with which to restore my files to my internal hard drive. When I attempt a restore, the program gives me a "restore failed" message, and I am worried that the NBF files I am using have become corrupted (these are the files with the actual data on them, the CAL appears to merely collate the data where each file and folder is located). Is there any way I can fix these potentially corrupted files, or any other way of getting my precious data back?

Resolved Question: SpinRite stuck for about a week, should I be concerned?
First my hard drive wouldn't boot, and would run Startup Repair with no success repeatedly. I performed the operation that moves all files to C:/BACKUP and reinstalls the OS without the disc, but that was unsuccessful. So I reinstalled the operating system (Vista, by the way) using the disc, still saving my files, luckily. This brought the computer close to working order, but it would run well for two minutes, freeze for thirty seconds, then repeat; impossible to listen to music or watch videos. CHKDSK and memory-checkers produced no results or relief. Based on the drive's previous behavior I suspected problems on the drive itself, so I ran SpinRite v6.0 at level 4. It progressed normally through my 232-gig hard drive, until reaching 98.71% completion. Here, the program began to find errors and correct them. I am concerned, however, because it stayed at this level of completion for at least five days, going on six now. The percentage has elapsed to 98.77%, but no further. I am aware SpinRite is supposed to take as long as it needs to attempt to fix all errors, but I can't help but feel as if something has gone awry here. Further info: the Graphic Status Display screen shows all but the last 12 dots as full, and only two of the full dots are the red U icon, with the rest being the blue square. The error count for "ecc corrected" is at 79,698, error rate 87. The realloc events error count is at 7. Also, the Real-Time Activities screen has displayed the same "Raw Data Snapshot" for the past few hours. Edit: I'm not sure about the hard drive, it's a Gateway laptop and the hard drive is the one that came with it. Model M-150s.

Resolved Question: My computer didn't come with any restore disc. How do i reinstall my windows 7 / data in the event of virus?
My computer says i can make a backup disc and a system image disc, will either of those save the OS (and all apps/data like Microsoft Office program and its documents) to the disc allowing me to restore everything if it crashes or I wipe it? If not, how do i restore everything (including Microsoft Office and my Windows 7 OS)? Thanks very much!

Resolved Question: How do you set up a database server for a small company?
So I work for a small company with about 6 computers in our office. Currently we have a network setup this way. One computer holds all of our company's data and through the "Share this Folder on Network" One of the problem is that I use this computer (with all of the data) for my work, and the computer crashed with virus or for whatever reason this second time. I feel that the data is so vulnerable to the computer failures and exposure to the virus to Trojan threat. And sometimes the network folder stops working for a reason that I do not know. ( I am a complete computer newb when it comes to networking.) 1. What is the simplest and safest method to separate this data for security and ease of access? (seperate computer? seperate external drive? is there a database computer?) 2. What is the best way to setup a backup system? Should I use Windows backup program? and what type of back up, copy? normal? what are they? 3. Is there a way to setup a program that requires the employees to login initially? I tried to look up SQL data server but I was completely lost, and its something I cannot handle. I guess I am looking for a simple solution, with some leads to how I can go about fixing this problem Thanks in advance for any help or comments.

Resolved Question: I formatted my computer and need to backup my data!! :(?
I formatted my computer and i forgot to backup my file and folders and i had very important documents for school. Is there a way to backup my data after a computer is formatted or is there a program that i can download like it just restore the previous folders and files

Voting Question: Where can I find support for Tomax Chainware version 4.2?
Tomax Chainware is a unix based retail program that no longer is supported by tomax. Our store is still running the program and it works great. I need to get a new computer to run the software and transfer all data and software to the new system but. The computer is over 15 years old, maybe more. The computer is an IBM Personal Computer 350-P75. IT does not have a disc drive or any of that new stuff like USB ports. But it does have a floppy drive. Can I somehow transfer the software from the floppy to a new computer. The only other backup is a tape TR-3 cartridge. How do I transfer the data and continue to run the program in my store?

Voting Question: A couple of questions on Windows Easy Transfer.?
Hi everyone. I'm planning on upgrading my Vista 32 bit to a Windows 7 64 bit. I realize that I have to backup all of my files somewhere else, I just a have a couple of questions regarding Windows Easy Transfer: 1. It works on Vista, right? 2. Last time a backed up my files to do a clean install I used norton ghost. When I put everything back on the computer, all the files were fine and in place, but nothing in the Program Files folder was installed. All the programs were there, but not many things would run properly. (I assume this has something to do with the registry?) So the question is, does Windows Easy Transfer retain all the registry info, including whatever tells the computer a certain program is installed (and will everything work ok in the end)? 3. Last question... I'm not 'transferring' my data. I'm planning on using an external HD (500 GB MyBook) as a temporary storage place. Will the external HD work with WET? Thanks

Resolved Question: What's the best way to backup my files?
My Computer is getting kinda slow, with: 9GB of music. All anywhere from 192kbps - 320kbps 3GB of my Youtube content (planning to make a new channel soon) 15GB of Videos. Stuff I recorded from my DVR. 597MB of Pictures, So you can see I have a lot of Data. I've been using Adrive, but its a pain to be uploading all the time. Plus, You have to download it and I only have an average Broadband Connection. I am Wondering what I can use, as for where to backup my data, and What programs I should use to do it.

Voting Question: lost all my data after install?
It's on a damaged partition, and it's not what you think, i didnt install windows onto my drive and all the data has gone, it's on a diffrent partition. it cant be reactivated for some reason, i have just managed to get windows back onto the computer, all my backups have gone, after hours of trying to install vista. anyone know any recovery program that could get the files back?? it's turned my 1TB drive into 4 partitions, first i only had 2, 1, 250GB and the second 750GB not theres 4 one is 108GB and just 14mb, another 8GB and the other one seems to be intact. my bad. beed trying to get this thing to work since 1pm! windows vista 64bit home edition. the thing is, in the control panel, administrative tools, disk management, the drive is there, but there is only 1 partition, the other partition on the same drive is there also (along with some other ones that seem to have just been created some how) they do not have drive letters, and i cant assign drive letters, all i can do if i right click on it is delete.

Resolved Question: Can i move storage data from my hard drive to my backup data drive?
On my computer, Vista is the C: drive where all of my data is stored, with 0 bytes on it. Then, i have my Data E: Drive, which has 44.0 GB left. I was wondering if i could transfer some storage space, because i don't want to move programs over to that drive. Thanks
