It’s possible the programs you are trying to run are attempting to set their own resolution and refresh rate. PC games often do this for instance. Occasionally a combination is selected that your monitor can’t handle. This is where the screen turns black and gives you your error message. The program you are attempting to run most likely has a setup utility for setting the resolution, color depth, and possibly refresh rate. Lower the resolution and color depth to the lowest setting and start raising it incrementally until you find the highest resolution you can run in.

Sometimes it’s the video card or the capacitors in the monitor just not holding a charge. If the PC reboots, it’s probably the Video card. If the PC is running but the monitor is black and displaying the error “Monitor is working out of scan range” then it is probably time to replace the monitor.
