Step 1
1. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\ProfileList
2. Under this key, there will be some number of profiles (usually 6), each of these which represents a user name that you will find under C:\Documents and Settings.
3. Click on each PROFILE key entry and look at the value ProfileImagePath to identify which one represents your username.
4. Inside the registry editor, using RegEdit or a clone registry editing program (REGLITE), edit this ProfileImagePath value that represents your username and CHANGE the path to where you want to move your settings to. In my case, I wanted to move my settings from C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME to “D:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME”.
5. Save this new path value in the registry editing program.
6. Now export the whole profile key that contains this value. You will be prompted for a file name to save the exported information to. Pick a location on your hard disk (not on the C drive) and export the key. When you finish the export and look at the output file, it should look something like this (note that exported filename locations inside the registry always represent a single “\” character with two “\\” characters)

7. Delete everything below your new path name. It should now look like this:

Step 2
1. Now do a full reboot (don’t just logoff/on) and sign into the ADMINISTRATOR account
2. Copy C:\Documents and Settings\Username folder (including all sub-folders) to the new path location where the target users personal settings are to be saved (D:\Documents and Settings\XYZ in this example).
3. Logoff the Administrator account and back onto the User account
4. Run the registry file you previously exported to and edited with the .REG extension (right-click it and choose merge)
5. Reboot the computer again and logon to the USER account
6. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\Username and try to delete the complete folder structure

I recommend using Acronis True Image to back up your data before you start this procedure. If you have important documents, don’t forget to copy them to an external drive or CD / DVD media. You will be hard pressed to get it back if you forget!!

With OEM’s like DELL or HP, you usually either are provided with discs, have to create your own discs or have a restore partition.

You really need to go to your manufacturer’s website and get the specific instructions for your model but here are some common ways to do it.

*Disconnect all connected devices (such as the Personal Media Drive, USB drives, printer, and fax), remove media from drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, and power cord.

Generic PC with Windows OS:
Insert original installation disc into your drive and boot to that drive. Make sure you have your Motherboard drivers (Chipset, Video, Audio, Ethernet, Modem, etc.) handy as you will need this after the OS is installed. You will also need to perform all upgrades to your OS like SP2 or SP3 on Windows XP and SP1 on Vista if your recovery media does not contain those updates.

DVD discs are usually encoded with a region code restricting the playback of the Disc to a specific area of the world which correlates to the matching hardware needed to play it. Discs without region coding are called all region or region 0 discs.

The commercial DVD player specification requires that a player to be sold in a given place not play discs encoded for a different region (region 0 discs are not restricted). The purpose of this is to allow motion picture studios to control aspects of a release, including content, release date, and, especially, price, according to the region. Many DVD players are or can be modified to be region-free, allowing playback of all discs.

Today I am writing to tell you about a very nice program called AnyDVD.

AnyDVD works in the background to automatically remove the copy protection of a DVD movie as soon as it’s inserted into the drive, allowing you then to backup the movie using a DVD backup tool such as CloneDVD and CloneDVD mobile. You can also remove the RPC region code, thereby making the movie region free and viewable on any DVD player and with any DVD player software.

AnyDVD is capable of removing unwanted movie features, including subtitles and prohibition messages such as copyright and FBI warnings. It also allows you to launch an external application whenever you insert or remove a disc, or prevent ‘PC-friendly’ software from automatically launching when you insert a video DVD.

Microsoft announcedtoday that it would keep Windows XP (Home edition only) available until June 30, 2010 — not June 30, 2008, as originally planned. This is particularly lame as XP pro is used in most of the computers I build. How hard would it be to include PRO in the updates?

The idea that Microsoft is so short sighted and negligent on the release and forced implementation of Vista sickens me. They know full well that there is nothing wrong with the OS and that most users are finally happy with it. Gamers are forced into the upgrade because of DirectX 10 only being available on Vista machines.

My problem isn’t so much that they are fazing out an old Operating System, it’s that they are forcing a piece of crap on me as a replacement. XP pro 64bit isn’t even compatible on most of my software yet and they are forcing this bloatware resource hog of an OS on me, like it’s me that’s an ID10T for not wanting Windows ME part II installed on my smoothly running XP box. Upgrading solves everything according to Darth Vader Gates.

You know what else is making me a little more than ticked off at the Redmond Death Star? They are forcing companies like Acer to pull their already available drivers for XP on systems that ship with Vista.
In other words, you go out and buy a laptop with Vista, don’t want Vista on it, buy a copy of XP and want to install it on the Acer laptop. You used to be able to download the drivers for it before January ‘08 but now according to Acer’s support team, they were forced by Microsoft to pull the drivers. Yes, they are all gone from Acer’s website and their FTP server as well (I downloaded most of them). Why?

I just want an OS that doesn’t suck, doesn’t use more resources than the previous version to do nothing and lastly to make the work I do every day more efficient. Vista does none of the things I want it to, it looks pretty and that’s about all. I hate using it and I don’t like telling my clients to use Ubuntu or buy a Mac. So, what do you do?? Do you just say; “What-ever” and keep selling / recommending it to your clients? I have recommended Ubuntu and Macs to people because I have no love for Vista at all.

One last thought, Vista conjures pictures of a pinnacle or a peak when I hear it but it feels more like falling off the Vista to your peril to me.

Heres to Ubuntu giving Linux a market share in the Desktop computer realm.
