How do I tell Windows Vista which mic (internal or external) to pay attention to?

I want to run my record player into the line-in jack on my laptop, to record old records. When I record, Windows sends the built-in mic signal to my recording program. How do I tell Windows Vista to ignore the built in mic and pay attention to the line signal?

    control panel -> hardware and sound -> sound -> recording -> right click the one you want to use and click set as default device
