Can I transfer XP from my laptop and put it on my newly built PC?

I have a Laptop that is currently running Windows XP. I am planning on putting Linux on the laptop and putting XP on my first build because I am more familiar w/ xp and I would be able to spot hard ware problems faster. I was wondering if it would be possible to take XP from the laptop and transfer it to my PC. I don’t have the key or anything like that. I do have the Dell reinstallation CD for XP w/ ServicePack 1a which came with the laptop( I am pretty sure that will not work on my PC though). Any ideas on what I could do? I really don’t have the money to purchase a brand new XP because I am saving up for Vista. Thankyou all!
Well I have decided to just clone the hard drive at the end of this week from my laptop befor I put linux on it. I figured it would be the fastest cheapest route. Thanks again everyone for your suggestions.
